Metrication is the way a country switches to the metric system. This system uses units like the metre and kilogram.

Most of the world uses it now. About 95% of people live in metric countries.

Governments often lead this change. They want everyone to use the same rules. This helps with science and trade between nations. Some countries make the change mandatory. This means everyone must follow the new rules. Other places make it voluntary. This means people can choose to use it.

Metrication can take a long time. For example, Guyana started in 2002. It did not make it mandatory for trade until 2017.

The United Kingdom uses both systems. They use metric units but keep some old ones. They still use miles and yards for roads. They also use pints for milk.

Some people resist these changes. They may feel the old ways are part of their culture. The United States also uses its own systems. However, all U.S. government agencies must use metric.
