technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Metrication is the name for the way a country switches to the metric system. This system uses standard units like the metre and the kilogram.

Most people in the world use it today. In fact, 95% of the world's population lives in countries that use the metric system. It helps different countries work together more easily. This is very helpful for global trade and for scientific research.

Governments usually lead this big change. They might make the new units mandatory, which means everyone must use them. Other times, they make the switch voluntary so people can choose. This process can take many years to finish. For example, Guyana started its change in 2002. It did not make the metric system mandatory for local trade until 2017.

Antigua and Barbuda also moved toward using the metric system by 2015.

This history began a long time ago in France. The process started during the 1790s. At first, the change was quite difficult to manage. Paris needed 500,000 metre sticks, but they only had 25,000 in stock.

Napoleon later helped by introducing a middle step. He created "customary measures" for small shops. These used old names but had new metric values. This made the transition a little easier for people.

Many different places joined the metric movement over the years. Portugal became the second country to adopt it in 1814. Spain followed in 1849, and many places in Latin America did too. Chile had already adopted the system by 1848.

In the 1800s, scientists worked hard to make sure measurements were perfect. They had to worry about how temperature changed the length of their tools. This was a very hard job for those measuring the Earth.

Today, some countries still use a mix of systems. The United Kingdom uses a dual system. They use metric units but keep imperial units like miles for roads. They also use pints for milk and beer.

The United States is similar. While the U.S. has a policy to adopt metric, many people still use traditional units. Some people feel their old measurements are part of their cultural identity. This makes the job of metrication a very slow process in some lands.
