Surveying is the science of finding exact positions on the Earth.

It is a profession that uses math and physics to measure distances and angles. These measurements help us create maps and set legal boundaries for land ownership. Surveyors also find the right spots for building components during construction. They can even find the locations of things hidden underground. This work is vital for many different types of scientific research.

To work, surveyors use many different tools to measure the world.

One common tool is the theodolite, which measures horizontal and vertical angles. A total station is a newer tool that measures both angles and distances. Some surveyors use GNSS receivers to find locations using satellites. They might also use drones or 3D scanners to see the land. Even simple tools like measuring tapes and levels are still used today. Most of these tools are attached to a tripod to stay steady.

People have been surveying since the beginning of recorded history.

In ancient Egypt, workers used ropes and geometry to fix land boundaries after Nile floods. They used these skills to build the Great Pyramid of Giza. The Romans also turned surveying into a real profession. In medieval Europe, people would walk around a village to remember its boundaries. In 1086, William the Conqueror used the Domesday Book to record land ownership in England. This shows how important knowing land details has always been.

Many famous scientists helped improve how we measure the Earth.

In 1620, Edmund Gunter introduced Gunter's chain for more accurate land plots. In 1787, Jesse Ramsden built a very precise theodolite. A huge project called the Great Trigonometric Survey of India began in 1801. This survey helped map the Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest. In the 1970s, the first total stations appeared to combine angle and distance measurements. Later, the US Air Force launched GPS satellites starting in 1978 to improve accuracy.

Surveying connects many parts of our modern world together.

When we ride on a train, we are using paths planned by surveyors. When we look at a map, we are seeing their hard work. They help build the roads and canals that move goods around. They also help manage how land is sold and used by governments. Without surveying, we would not know exactly where one piece of land ends and another begins. It is the foundation for how we organize our human environment.
