The Dutch mathematician Willebrord Snellius introduced the systematic use of triangulation. In 1615, he surveyed a distance of approximately 360 kilometers from Alkmaar to Breda. Although he underestimated the distance by 3.5%, his work showed how to correct for the curvature of the Earth. He also demonstrated how to calculate a point's position inside a triangle using angles.

Large-scale mapping projects have shaped our understanding of the world. Between 1733 and 1740, Jacques and César Cassini performed the first triangulation of France. Surveying remains a vital link in modern infrastructure and legal systems. It was essential during the Industrial Revolution to lay out canals, roads, and railways. In the United States, the Land Ordinance of 1785 created the Public Land Survey System to divide western territories into township grids. This allowed for the organized sale of land through specific sections and fractions. In South Australia, the Torrens system was introduced in 1858 to simplify land transactions through a centralized register. From planning transportation to managing land usage, surveying provides the data needed to organize the human environment.
