Geodesy is the science of measuring our planet.

It looks at Earth's shape and its gravity. It also studies how Earth moves in space. This science is very important for our daily lives. It provides the basis for making maps and navigating. It also helps with building things like roads and bridges.

Without it, modern tools like GPS would not work well.

Earth has a very complex shape. It is not a perfect, smooth ball. The way Earth spins causes it to bulge at the middle. This shape is called an ellipsoid.

Scientists also use a model called the geoid. The geoid represents the shape of the sea level. It is an irregular surface that follows gravity.

Because the geoid is bumpy, it is hard to use for math. Instead, scientists use the smooth ellipsoid for calculations. The difference between these two shapes is called geoidal undulation.

People have studied Earth's shape for a long time. The word comes from an Ancient Greek word. It means the "division of Earth."

Long ago, people thought the Earth was flat. They thought the sky was a physical dome above us. They later realized Earth was a sphere. They saw this during lunar eclipses. They also saw stars change position as they traveled.

Modern science uses very precise numbers. The 1980 Geodetic Reference System is a key model.

It uses a measurement of 6,378,137 meters for its equatorial radius. This system helps run the Global Positioning System, or GPS. Scientists also use different coordinate systems. Some systems stay fixed to the stars. Others are attached to the Earth itself.

These systems help us find exact locations in 3D space.

Geodesy connects to many things you use every day. When you use a phone to find a store, you use geodesy.

It also helps ships move across the ocean safely. It helps us manage natural resources like minerals. Even timekeeping relies on these precise measurements.

It even helps us watch how the Earth's crust moves. This includes watching tides and shifting plates.

Everything from trade to travel depends on it.
