Frost

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Frost is a thin layer of ice on a surface.

It forms when water vapor turns straight into ice. Water vapor is an invisible gas in the air. This happens when the air gets very cold. Usually, air can hold a certain amount of water. When it gets too cold, the air cannot hold it all. The extra water must go somewhere. It moves onto cold surfaces to form tiny seeds. These seeds grow into ice crystals.

Crystals can look many ways. Some look like tiny needles. Others look like white hair or trees. This type is called hoar frost. It often forms on clear, cold nights.

Frost can also form on windows. This is called window frost. It happens when warm air inside a house meets cold glass.

Frost can even hurt plants. If the water inside a plant freezes, the plant may die. This is called frost damage. Farmers work hard to protect their crops from this cold.
