Evaporation

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Evaporation is a way that a liquid turns into a gas. This change happens right at the surface of the liquid.

It is a very important part of how our world works. The sun provides the solar energy that drives this process. This energy moves water from oceans, lakes, and even the soil. Scientists call the combination of evaporation and plant breathing evapotranspiration.

To understand how it works, we have to look at tiny molecules. These molecules are always moving and bumping into one another. When they collide, they pass energy back and forth. A molecule near the surface must gain enough energy to break free. It must also be moving in the right direction to escape. Once it has enough energy, it leaves the liquid and enters the air as a gas.

This process can actually make things feel much colder. This is called evaporative cooling. When the fastest molecules escape, the ones left behind have less average energy. This drop in energy means the temperature of the liquid goes down. This is the same reason why sweat helps cool your body.

You can also see this happen with ethanol in a science demonstration.

Many different things can change how fast evaporation happens. Heat is a big one because higher temperatures give molecules more energy. Wind also helps by moving the gas away from the surface. If the air is already full of gas, we call that high humidity. In a closed space, evaporation continues until the air is saturated. This is when the number of molecules leaving equals the number returning.

We see evaporation happening in many parts of our daily lives. It is how laundry dries on a windy day. It is also how clothes dryers work by using hot air. People in India use clay containers called matki to keep water cool. In Spain, people use a container called a botijo for the same reason. Even large machines like internal combustion engines rely on turning fuel into vapor to work properly.
