Condensation

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Condensation is a way that matter changes its form. It happens when a gas turns into a liquid. This is the opposite of vaporization. Most people think of it when they see the water cycle. It can also happen when water vapor touches a solid or liquid surface. Sometimes, gas turns directly into a solid. We call that special change deposition.

How does this change work? It starts when tiny clusters of molecules form in a gas. In clouds, these clusters become raindrops or snowflakes. Sometimes, microbes in the air help this by making proteins. These proteins help bind water molecules together. Condensation often happens when a vapor is cooled down. It can also happen if the gas is compressed. This makes the gas reach a limit where it cannot stay a gas.

Scientists have studied this for a long time. They use a tool called a psychrometer. This tool measures how fast condensation and evaporation happen. It looks at air moisture at different pressures and temperatures. People also use tools called condensers. These machines cool or squeeze vapor to collect liquid. In labs, condensation is a key part of distillation. This is a way to separate parts of a liquid mixture.

There are many real uses for this science. People build air wells and fog fences to catch water. These tools help collect water for human use. Some groups even teach people how to use water condensers in deserts. Animals use it too, like the thorny devil in Australia. Darkling beetles in Namibia and coast redwoods in the USA also use it. Even scientists use it in cloud chambers to see radiation.

Condensation can also be a problem in our homes. It happens when warm, moist air hits a cold surface. This often occurs near single glazed windows in winter. The air cools and cannot hold the water vapor anymore. This can cause dampness, mold, or even rot in wood. You can stop this by opening windows or using fans. Using a dehumidifier or an extractor fan also helps keep air dry.
