A vapor is a special kind of gas.

It is a substance in a gas phase. This happens at a temperature below its critical temperature. The critical temperature is the highest heat where a liquid can exist. For water, this temperature is 374 °C. Because it is below this point, the vapor can turn back into a liquid. You can do this by increasing the pressure. You do not even need to change the heat. This makes vapors very different from fixed gases like air.

How does this work step by step? A vapor can live alongside a liquid or a solid. When they are together, they reach a state called equilibrium. This means they are in a steady balance. In this state, the gas has a specific pressure. We call this the equilibrium vapor pressure. This pressure stays the same regardless of how much liquid is there. If the vapor pressure gets too high, it becomes supersaturated. The vapor will then condense onto tiny bits of dust.

Scientists use these rules to study the world. They use vapor in tools like cloud chambers. In these chambers, vapor helps us see tiny particles of radiation. These particles cause water droplets to form. Vapors are also used in science labs. They help with processes like distillation. This is a way to separate parts of a liquid. They also use vapor for headspace extraction. This helps scientists study a liquid sample before using gas chromatography.

There are many important facts about how vapors behave. The amount of vapor is measured by its partial pressure. Vapors also follow the barometric formula in a gravitational field. This is the same way normal gases work. We also look at the boiling point of a liquid. This is the temperature where vapor pressure equals normal atmospheric pressure. For mixtures, we use Raoult's law. This law helps us find the pressure of each part in a mix. The total pressure is just the sum of all parts.

You can see vapors working in your daily life. Water vapor in the air can turn into mist or fog.

Some lamps use vapor to make light. These are called mercury-vapor or sodium vapor lamps. Even perfumes use this idea. Chemicals in perfume turn into vapor at different speeds. This creates different scent notes. Be careful with flammable liquids, too. The liquid itself does not burn. Instead, the vapor cloud above it can catch fire.
