Normal steam is often "wet." This means it has tiny water drops in it. These drops can cause big problems. In a steam engine, the drops hit metal parts. They can strike with enough force to crack or bend them. Superheated steam is very dry. It stays as a gas even when it cools a little. This keeps moving parts safe in big engines.

To make this steam, people use a superheater. This is a tool that adds more heat to the steam. It can use contact or radiation to work.

Superheated steam is great for making power. It has a lot of internal energy. This energy can push turbine blades or pistons. This movement turns a shaft to make power. It is also used to dry things like paper. Some people use it to clean soil in greenhouses. It is not great for heating things, though. It acts like an insulator, which means it is a poor conductor of heat.
