A steamroller is a heavy machine used to level surfaces.

It uses a steam engine for power. Most steamrollers have three parts. They have two large smooth wheels in the back. They also have one wide roll in the front. This front roll helps the machine steer.

The weight of the machine flattens the ground. This makes roads and airfields smooth.

Aveling and Porter were the first to sell these machines. They made the first practical steamroller in 1867. It weighed more than 30 tons. Later, makers made lighter ones that weighed 10 tons. This made them easier to handle. Some machines were also built as "convertibles." This means they could work as a steamroller or a traction engine. A traction engine is a machine used for pulling heavy loads.

In the 1920s, a new type called a "tandem" became popular. It had two wide rolls. This was good for rolling asphalt. Asphalt is a black, sticky material used for roads.
