Tillage

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Farmers work the dirt to help crops grow.

They use tools to dig and stir the ground. This is called tillage.

First, they do deep work. This makes the soil soft and loose. It also mixes in food for the plants.

Next, they do light work. This makes the surface smooth. A smooth surface makes a good bed for seeds.

Tillage also helps stop weeds. It can pull weeds up from the dirt. It can also bury their leaves.

People use many tools for this job. Some use hands and shovels. Others use big tractors.

Tillage helps farmers grow food for us all.
