Farmers need to get seeds out of grain.

This is called threshing.

Long ago, people used sticks to beat the grain. They also used two sticks joined together. This tool was called a flail.

Some people used animals to help. Oxen would walk over the grain. This helped knock the seeds loose.

After that, the wind helps clean the grain. People toss the seeds into the air. The wind blows away the light bits.
