Keeping these systems working is a very important job.

Plumbers follow many steps to do their work. First, they read drawings to see where pipes should go. They must find where pipes go through walls or floors. Then, they use tools to measure, cut, and bend pipes. They join these pipes together using many different ways. Some methods include soldering or using special fittings. Finally, they use gauges to test for leaks with air or water pressure.

The history of this job goes back to the Roman Empire. The word plumber comes from the Latin word for lead. Romans used lead for pipes, drains, and even baths. Some Roman roofs were also covered with lead. In medieval times, the name still meant someone who worked with lead. For example, a worker named Gilbert fixed a roof at Westminster Palace. He was called a plumber because he covered the roof with lead.

Learning this trade takes many years of training. In Australia, a person needs a four-year apprenticeship. They must also earn a Certificate III in Plumbing. In the United Kingdom, plumbers must pass specific vocational requirements. Some places in the United States require a master plumber license. Canada uses the Red Seal Program to set high standards. This program helps show that a worker has the right skills.

This job can be quite difficult and sometimes risky. Plumbers might face cuts, burns, or even electric shocks. They may also work in high places or tight spaces. Working with sewage can be dangerous because of microbes. These tiny germs can cause diseases like cholera or hepatitis. Even so, plumbers keep our homes safe and clean.
