An abbreviation is a short way to write.

It can be a single letter or a short phrase. People use many ways to make them. One way is a contraction. This is when you use an apostrophe to replace letters. For example, "I'm" is a short way to say "I am." Another way is an initialism. This uses the first letter of many words. Examples include "FBI" or "USA." Sometimes people say these letters as a new word. These are called acronyms. A famous example is "NASA."

“To Penna. R.R. Station”

Long ago, people used abbreviations to save time. Writing was hard work. Many words were carved into stone. In the 15th century, people used them to copy books faster. In the 1990s, people used them on mobile phones. This led to a style called "Textese." This style uses many short words in text messages. Today, people still use them in many ways. Some people use a period, or a full stop, at the end. Others do not use them at all. It often depends on the rules of the place or the book.
