An apostrophe is a small punctuation mark.

It looks like a tiny comma. In English, it has two main jobs. First, it shows where letters are missing. We call this an elision. For example, we write "don't" instead of "do not."

Second, it shows that something belongs to someone. This is called the possessive case. You might write "the cat's toy." If there are many cats, you write "the cats' toys." This helps readers know if one cat or many cats own the toys.

Sometimes, the mark is used for groups. We see this with the Oakland A's.

The word comes from a Greek word. It means "turning away." This describes how letters are left out. People first used it in the 1400s. Later, it became common in English. It can even help with time. You can write "one hour's rest." This little mark keeps our writing clear and easy to read.
