Each letter has a big form and a small form. Five letters are vowels. These are A, E, I, O, and U. The other 19 letters are consonants. The letters W and Y can act like both types.

English writing has changed over a long time. In the 5th century, people used a runic alphabet called futhorc. Later, missionaries brought the Latin script. This helped change how English looked. Some old letters, like thorn and eth, were replaced by "th." Other old letters, like wynn, became the letter W.

Some letters are used more than others. The letter E is the most common. The letter Z is used the least. Sometimes, two letters work together to make one sound. These are called digraphs.

We also use marks called diacritics on some words. These marks come from other languages. For example, the word "naïve" uses two dots. Most English words do not use these marks. We usually just use the 26 basic letters.
