In writing, we call this a silent letter. It is a letter that we do not say out loud. These letters can be quite tricky for readers and writers.

Silent letters can help us in many ways. They help us tell two words apart. For example, 'be' and 'bee' sound the same. The silent 'e' helps us know which one is which. They also show where a word came from. The word 'vineyard' has a silent letter that points to 'vines.'

Sometimes, words change over time. People used to say every letter in 'breakfast.' Now, some parts are silent. Other times, people add letters to match old names. The 's' in 'island' was added by mistake! People thought it was like the word 'isolate.'

Different people say things in different ways. In the US, the 'h' in 'herb' is silent. In the UK, people say the 'h.' In German, a silent 'h' can make a vowel sound longer. In French, many words end with a silent letter. It is a big part of how languages work!
