Have you ever noticed a letter that stays quiet when you speak?

In writing, we call this a silent letter. It is a letter that does not make a sound in a word. These letters can be quite tricky for people to learn. Some letters work in pairs to make one sound. These are called digraphs. For example, the letters 'th' in 'thin' make one single sound. This is a very common way for letters to work together.

Silent letters can be helpful tools for readers. They help us tell the difference between words that sound the same. Think about the words 'be' and 'bee.' They sound exactly alike, but the silent 'e' shows us they are different. Silent letters also give us clues about a word's meaning. The word 'vineyard' has a silent letter that points to the word 'vines.' They can even show us which part of a word to stress. In the word 'giraffe,' the final 'e' helps us know how to say it.

Sometimes, letters become silent because of how language changes over time. In the past, people might have said every letter in 'breakfast.' Over many years, the way we speak changed, but the spelling stayed the same. Other times, people added letters to match old history. This is called etymology. For example, the 'b' in 'debt' was added to match the Latin word 'debit.' In the word 'island,' an 's' was added by mistake. People thought it was related to the word 'isolate.'

Different people use silent letters in different ways depending on where they live. In the United States, the 'h' in 'herb' is often silent. However, people in the United Kingdom usually pronounce that 'h.' In German, a silent 'h' is often used to show a vowel is long. You might see this in the word 'Zahn,' which means tooth. In French, silent letters are very common. Many French words end with a letter that you do not say out loud.

Other languages also have their own special silent letters. In Danish, the letter 'd' is silent in words like 'af' or 'og.' In the Faroese language, the letter 'ð' is almost always silent. It is kept in writing to show the history of the language. Even in English, some people might drop certain sounds based on their accent. A speaker might say the 't' in 'sandwich' or leave it out. Language is always full of these small, quiet surprises.
