It is also known as the Roman script. This name comes from its roots in ancient Rome. Today, it is the most widely used writing system on Earth. About 2.6 billion people use these letters. That is 36% of the whole world population. It helps people share ideas across many different lands.

Writing with these letters has changed many times. Long ago, the letters came from a Greek alphabet. The Etruscans changed those letters first. Then, the Ancient Romans changed them again. Over time, people added new shapes to match new sounds. For example, the letter W started as two V's. In the 11th century, it became common to use W instead of a letter called wynn.

History shows how these letters traveled the world. The Roman Empire helped spread the script from Italy. As the empire grew, the letters moved around the Mediterranean Sea. In the Middle Ages, the script spread to Northern Europe. People used it to replace older ways of writing like runes. It also spread through the work of missionaries. This helped the script reach places like Africa and the Americas.

Many different countries use these letters in unique ways. In 1928, Türkiye adopted the Latin alphabet for the Turkish language. In the 1950s, the Zhuang language in China began using a Latin-based script. Some places are even changing their writing systems right now. For instance, Kazakhstan plans to use a Latin alphabet by 2025. Uzbekistan also worked to finish its switch to Latin by 2023.

These letters are very important for our modern technology. In the 1960s, the computer industry needed a standard way to use characters. The ISO created a rule called ISO/IEC 646 to help. This was based on a system called ASCII from the United States. ASCII used the 26 letters of the English alphabet. This helped computers and phones talk to each other easily. Now, these same basic letters are used in many digital tools.
