Some letters are quiet. They stay in a word. But we do not say them. These are called silent letters.

Silent letters can be tricky. They can help us spell. They also show where a word came from. Some letters help us know which word to use. For example, 'be' and 'bee' sound the same. But the silent 'e' helps us tell them apart.

Sometimes, we stop saying a sound. But we keep the spelling the same. This happens in words like 'breakfast'. People used to say every letter. Now, some parts are quiet.

In some lands, people say things differently. In the US, the 'h' in 'herb' is quiet. In the UK, they say it. It is fun to hear these changes!
