A messenger is a person, object, or signal that carries information or items from one place to another. This role is vital for connection. It allows ideas, news, and physical goods to travel between people or systems. Throughout history, the concept of a messenger has appeared in many different ways. It can be a human job, a religious role, or a biological process. It even describes tools used in modern technology and space exploration.

In human society, messengers perform specific tasks to keep things moving. A people courier is a person or company that delivers mail or packages. Some specialize as bicycle messengers. These individuals use bikes to navigate through busy cities. They often carry a specific type of bag known as a messenger bag. In legal settings, messengers hold official titles. A Messenger-at-arms is an officer in the Scottish Court of Session. A Messenger of the Court is a court officer. They carry communications and execute specific legal orders.

Religion and mythology also feature messengers as powerful figures. In Greek mythology, Hermes served as the messenger for the gods and goddesses. He was also the god of travelers, merchants, athletes, and shepherds. In Islam, Muhammad and other prophets are recognized as Messengers of Allah, which means God. These figures are central to how people understand divine communication. These roles show how humans have always sought ways to receive messages from the unknown.

Science uses the term to describe how tiny systems communicate. Chemical messengers are molecules used for cellular signaling. Two common types are hormones and neurotransmitters. Another important type is messenger RNA, often called mRNA. This molecule carries information from DNA to the ribosome. The ribosome is the site where a cell performs protein synthesis. Without these messengers, cells would not know how to function or build what they need.

Technology has changed how we send messages instantly. Instant messaging is a tool for online text communication. Many famous services have used this name. Meta provides Facebook Messenger. Microsoft has offered several services, including Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. Windows Live Messenger was a client for these services. Yahoo! also created Yahoo Messenger. Even space exploration uses the name. NASA launched a probe named MESSENGER to study the planet Mercury. This mission began in 2004.

Artists and creators use the word "Messenger" to title many works. In literature, authors like Lois Lowry and Markus Zusak have written novels with this title. In film, many movies use the name. Examples include a 1918 film starring Oliver Hardy and a 1999 film about Joan of Arc directed by Luc Besson. Music is also full of messengers. Musicians like Paul McCartney and Linkin Park have songs called "The Messenger." There are even record labels, such as Messenger Records, and musical groups like The Messengers Choir.

History also shows messengers in physical tools and transport. On 17th to 19th century sailing ships, a Transport Messenger cable was used. This was a continuous loop of cable or chain. It was attached to a capstan to raise anchor cables. In the early 1900s, various vessels and planes used the name. There was a 1921 American biplane called the Verville-Sperry M-1 Messenger. There was also an 1876 steamboat named Messenger that sailed the Puget Sound. These names show how the idea of carrying something forward is very old.
