A courier is a person or an organization that delivers messages, packages, or letters from one location to another. While many couriers operate through commercial contracts, some are employees of government or state agencies. A notable example is a diplomatic courier, who handles official state communications.

Unlike standard postal services, courier services are defined by specialized features. These include increased speed, enhanced security, and detailed tracking capabilities. They often require a signature upon delivery to ensure the item reaches the correct person. Because these premium features offer high levels of individualization and swiftness, courier services are typically more expensive than everyday mail.

Modern courier operations utilize various logistical models to move goods across different scales. Many large global companies, such as DHL, FedEx, UPS, and TNT, utilize a hub and spoke model. In this system, goods are moved from local collection points to a central hub before being sent out to their final destinations.

For local urban deliveries, couriers often use bicycles or motorcycles to navigate traffic. For longer distances, the network expands to include trucks, railroads, and aircraft. Some specialized businesses use on-board couriers, or OBCs. These are individuals who travel at a moment's notice, typically via commercial airlines, to deliver critical items. Companies use this expensive service to prevent costly disruptions, such as an assembly line stopping or a delayed organ transplant.

The history of courier services stretches back to ancient civilizations. In antiquity, messages were delivered via runners, riders on horseback, or even homing pigeons. Xenophon attributed the first use of couriers to the Persian prince Cyrus the Younger. One of the most famous historical accounts involves the Greek courier Pheidippides. In 490 BCE, he is said to have run 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to announce a Greek victory. This legendary feat gave rise to the modern marathon race.

In ancient Greece, specialized runners known as Hemerodromoi, or day-runners, were celebrated for their endurance. These runners carried news and performed surveillance by watching military movements from high hills. Later, during the time of Augustus, the Greeks and Romans employed anabasii. These were couriers mounted on horses or in chariots used to deliver commands quickly across long distances.

Courier industries vary significantly by country and geography. In Australia, the market is highly competitive around major capital cities. Australia Post is the only large company providing a country-wide service, though it operates as a government-owned enterprise in a competitive market against firms like UPS and Fastway. In China, international companies like TNT and DHL connect the country to the US and UK. Domestic services include many operators, such as SF Express and ZTO Express. Some services, like E-EMS, are specialized products created through a cooperation between China Post and Alipay.

In India, India Post is the largest provider, maintaining approximately 155,000 branches. Notably, 139,000 of these branches, or 90%, are located in rural areas.

In the United Kingdom, the same-day courier market has unique origins. It grew from London taxi companies, which eventually established separate arms for motorcycle despatch riders. The UK also has a very popular "Man & Van" or freelance business model. This model is successful because it has low business requirements, often requiring only a vehicle. Historically, most UK couriers were considered self-employed, though salaried employment has grown recently. The industry has also shifted due to the electronic age. As email and PDFs became common, documentation revenues for couriers decreased by 50 percent over a five-year period. This has forced many firms to focus on more flexible, regional services.

The United States courier industry played a vital role in national expansion. During the westward migration and the gold rush, courier services were essential for commerce. Wells Fargo was founded in 1852 and became a leading package delivery company. They specialized in shipping gold, newspapers, and packages throughout the West. Their presence in every camp and settlement allowed people to maintain connections to their homes. Shortly after Wells Fargo, the Pony Express was also established to facilitate movement.

Today, the courier industry is deeply integrated into global trade and technology. In countries like Bangladesh and Malaysia, almost all courier services can be tracked online. This digital connectivity allows for precise monitoring of shipments. Whether through the use of specialized software for electronic proof of delivery or the massive branch networks of India Post, couriers remain a fundamental part of the global logistics system. They bridge the gap between producers and consumers, ensuring that both information and physical goods move efficiently across the planet.
