Road transport

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Road transport is the movement of people and goods across established road networks. This system is vital for modern life because it connects different regions and economies. Road transport can be divided into two main industries: the transportation of goods and the transportation of people. In many nations, specific licensing and safety regulations keep these two sectors separate.

Modern road systems use various vehicles depending on the specific task. For moving goods, companies might use large trucks for heavy shipments. For smaller items or short distances, vans or pickup trucks are more common. Some regions still use non-motorized modes like donkey carts or horse-drawn carriages. People use roads through mass transit like buses or individual modes like bicycles. Specialist vehicles, such as ambulances, provide transport for specific emergency situations.

Roads vary greatly in their design and complexity. Local roads might only have two lanes and at-grade intersections. In contrast, controlled-access highways use grade separation to manage cross traffic. This means different roads cross at different heights to avoid collisions. Modern highways also feature defined lanes and signage to guide drivers. These features help manage the flow of traffic and ensure safety for all users.

History shows that road networks have always been a feature of powerful empires. Early humans used dirt tracks that followed animal game trails. The Persians built the Royal Roads to connect their empire. The Romans later developed advanced, solid roads to move their armies quickly. They used deep roadbeds of crushed stone to ensure the paths stayed dry. This prevented the clay soils from turning into impassable mud.

During the 18th century, new systems emerged to fund road maintenance. In Britain, Parliament passed acts to create toll-gates. These gates allowed local justices to collect fees for professional upkeep. This pattern helped improve the flow of commerce across many counties. In West Africa, the Ashanti Empire also maintained well-kept road networks. The Dahomey kingdom used toll roads to collect yearly taxes based on occupation and goods.

Industrial engineers revolutionized road construction in the 18th and 19th centuries. John Metcalf focused on drainage and smooth, convex surfaces. Pierre-Marie-Jérôme Trésaguet used a layer of large rocks called a sub-base. This sub-base transfers the weight of traffic to the ground to prevent deformation. Thomas Telford improved this by using heavy rock foundations and sloped surfaces.

John Loudon McAdam developed the first truly modern road method called macadam. He discovered that massive rock foundations were not always necessary. Instead, he used a crust of soil and stone aggregate to protect the native soil. His roads were built as level as possible with a slight camber. This camber allowed rainwater to run off into side ditches. He used very specific stone sizes for his layers. The lower stones were no larger than 20 mm.

As motorcars arrived, road technology changed once again. Macadam roads were often too dusty or prone to erosion. In 1901, Edgar Purnell Hooley patented tarmac to solve these problems. He noticed that spilled tar created a smooth, dust-free surface. His process involved mechanically mixing tar with aggregate before compacting it with a steamroller. This mixture often included small amounts of resin, pitch, or Portland cement.
