Pierre-Marie-Jérôme Trésaguet used a layer of large rocks called a sub-base. This sub-base transfers the weight of traffic to the ground to prevent deformation. Thomas Telford improved this by using heavy rock foundations and sloped surfaces.
John Loudon McAdam developed the first truly modern road method called macadam. He discovered that massive rock foundations were not always necessary. Instead, he used a crust of soil and stone aggregate to protect the native soil. His roads were built as level as possible with a slight camber. This camber allowed rainwater to run off into side ditches. He used very specific stone sizes for his layers. The lower stones were no larger than 20 mm.
As motorcars arrived, road technology changed once again. Macadam roads were often too dusty or prone to erosion. In 1901, Edgar Purnell Hooley patented tarmac to solve these problems. He noticed that spilled tar created a smooth, dust-free surface. His process involved mechanically mixing tar with aggregate before compacting it with a steamroller. This mixture often included small amounts of resin, pitch, or Portland cement.
