Later, the Appian Way became one of the most famous roads. Many of these paths were so well made that they lasted for thousands of years. Some even sit underneath the roads we use today.

There were also private roads, called Viae privatae, that led to specific estates. Smaller roads, known as Viae vicinales, ran through villages and crossroads. Even in places like Britain, many roads were improved to help the empire.

These roads worked much like a modern highway system.

Just as we use highways to get between big cities, Romans used their roads to connect provinces. The Romans even had rules about how wide a road must be. Laws from 450 BC said a straight road should be 8 Roman feet wide.

History shows that the road system grew very large over time. Early roads, like the Via Salaria in 361 BC, may have started as simple leveled earthen tracks. As the empire grew, the network became much more complex. At its peak, 372 great roads interconnected 113 provinces.

There were also 29 great military highways that radiated from the capital city. In Gaul, at least 500 roadways were improved. In Britain, at least 200 roads were improved by the Romans.

Roman law even set specific rules for how roads should be built. The Laws of the Twelve Tables from about 450 BC required straight roads to be 8 Roman feet wide. This is about 2.37 meters. Curved roads were required to be twice that width. In the later republic, many public roads in rural areas were 12 Roman feet wide. This width allowed two standard carts to pass each other without hitting pedestrians.

The law also gave travelers the right to pass over private land if a road was in disrepair.

Building and maintaining these roads was a massive responsibility. Building them was considered a military task called viam munire. Censors were high officials who had the authority to construct and repair roads. They were sometimes expected to pay for repairs with their own money. Other officials, called curatores viarum, were tasked with raising funds.

Financing often came from taxes or contributions from neighboring landowners. Traveling on these roads was not always free, as tolls were often collected at bridges or city gates.

These roads had a lasting impact on the world. Many of the original courses and surfaces survived for thousands of years. Some modern roads are actually built directly over the old Roman paths.
