Larks are a large family of birds known as Alaudidae.

These birds are found all over the world, which is called a cosmopolitan distribution. Most lark species live in Africa, but they live in many different places. In North America, you will only find the horned lark.

Australia only has one type, which is Horsfield's bush lark. Many larks prefer to live in dry regions. When people just say "lark," they usually mean the Eurasian skylark.

Larks have special ways of living on the ground. Most species have streaked brown feathers to help them hide. This camouflage keeps them safe while they are on their nests.

They eat both seeds and insects to stay healthy. Adult larks mostly eat seeds, but they feed insects to their babies.

Some larks have heavy bills to crack seeds open. Other larks have long, curved bills that are great for digging.

Most larks build cup-shaped nests out of dead grass on the ground.

Scientists have studied larks for a long time to see how they are related to other birds. In 1825, an Irish zoologist named Nicholas Aylward Vigors introduced the family Alaudidae.

He originally called them a subfamily of the finch family. Larks are easy for scientists to identify because of their unique body parts. For example, they have a specific pattern of scales on their legs.

They also lack a certain bony structure in their song organ called a syrinx. This makes them different from many other songbirds.

There are 98 different species of larks living today. These species are split into 24 different groups called genera.

The Tibetan lark is the largest of all the larks. On the other hand, the Spizocorys species are the smallest.

These tiny birds might weigh very little. Larks are also unique because they lose all their feathers during their first moult. This is a special change that happens as they grow. Most larks lay between one and eight eggs in a clutch.

A mother lark will sit on her eggs for 11 to 16 days.

Larks have a big place in human stories and music. Because they sing while flying in the sky, they represent the start of a new day.

Famous writers like William Shakespeare and Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote about them.

Musicians have also been inspired by their beautiful songs. For example, Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote a famous piece called "The Lark Ascending."

In some parts of Europe, people have historically eaten larks as a special food. However, it is harder to find lark meat today because their habitats are shrinking.
