Cuckoo bee

Cuckoo bees are a very special group of bees. They do not live like most other bees do. Most bees build their own homes and gather food. Cuckoo bees use a way of life called kleptoparasitism. This means they lay their eggs in the nests of other bees. This behavior is a lot like how cuckoo birds act.

They do not have to work to make a home. Instead, they rely on the hard work of other bees.

This way of life works in a few steps. First, the female cuckoo bee finds a nest made by a host bee. This host bee has already made a cell with a pollen ball inside. The cuckoo bee lays her egg in that cell. When the cuckoo bee larva hatches, it finds the pollen ball. The larva eats the pollen for food. Sometimes, the larva even kills and eats the host larva too.

Scientists have studied these bees for a long time. Charles Duncan Michener wrote about them in the year 2000. He looked at how many different bee groups do this. He found 16 groups that live in social bee nests. He also found 31 groups that live in nests of solitary bees. These groups make up many thousands of different species. This shows that this way of life is very common in the bee world.

There are many facts about how these bees look. Females are easy to spot because they lack a scopa. A scopa is a part used to carry pollen. They also often have less hair on their bodies. Their exoskeleton, or hard outer shell, may be very thick. Some even have mandibles that look like sabers.

These strong jaws help them in their way of life.

Some cuckoo bees are even social parasites. This happens when they live in a group nest. They might kill the host queen and take her place. This is a very big change for the whole nest. Some cuckoo bees look like their hosts because they are related. This is known as Emery's Rule in nature. It helps us understand how different living things connect to each other.
