Bumblebees are fuzzy insects with round bodies.

They belong to a group called Bombus. There are over 250 kinds of these bees. Most live in the Northern Hemisphere. Some live in South America too.

Most bumblebees live in small groups called colonies. A single queen leads the group. They build nests to stay safe. Some bees are different. Cuckoo bumblebees do not make nests. Instead, they take over nests made by other bees.

Bumblebees use a long tongue called a proboscis. They use it to lap up nectar from flowers. They also collect pollen to feed their young. Many bees have a pollen basket. This is a shiny area on their back legs. They use it to carry pollen back home.

Their bright colors act as a warning. This is called aposematic coloration. It tells predators that the bee can sting.

Bumblebees help plants grow by moving pollen. This makes them very important for farms.
