In these groups, everyone has a special job. This is known as a division of labor. Some members are the queens or kings. They are the only ones who make babies. Other members are workers or soldiers.

Workers find food and clean the home. Soldiers protect the group from danger. In many groups, the workers cannot make babies themselves. They are often sterile, which means they cannot reproduce.

These groups also have overlapping generations. This means mothers and their adult children live together. They work together to care for the young babies.

You can find these teams in many insects like ants and bees. Some termites and even a few mammals, like naked mole-rats, live this way too. The whole colony acts like one big living thing. Each part helps the whole group survive.
