Pauropods are tiny animals that live in soil.

They look like small millipedes. Most are white or brown. They are very small. They measure only 0.3 to 2 mm long.

Their name means "small feet." Most adults have only nine pairs of legs. This is fewer legs than other similar bugs. They do not have eyes or hearts. They use sensory organs to feel light. They also have long hairs on their bodies. These hairs help them feel things.

Pauropods live in leaf mold and dirt. They eat fungi and mold. They also eat some plant roots. They do not dig. Instead, they crawl through tiny cracks in the soil. They move in quick bursts. They also change direction often.

These bugs grow by molting. Molting is when an animal sheds its skin to grow. Young pauropods start with very few legs. They add more legs each time they molt. They grow until they reach their adult size. Scientists have found over 900 species of these bugs. They live all over the world.
