They belong to a group called Diplopoda. This name comes from how their bodies are built. Most millipedes have two pairs of legs on each body part. These parts are called segments.

Most millipedes move slowly. They eat dead leaves and old plants. This helps clean up the forest floor. Some types eat fungi or drink plant fluid.

Millipedes have many ways to stay safe. Some can roll into a tight ball. This protects their legs with a hard shell. Other types let out chemicals from their bodies to scare foes. Tiny bristle millipedes use small hairs instead.

These creatures are very old. They first appeared during the Silurian period. Some prehistoric millipedes were huge. One group called Arthropleura grew to over 2.5 meters long. Today, the giant African millipede is a very large species. Most millipedes are harmless to people. However, some can be pests in gardens or greenhouses.
