The second subclass is Chilognatha. This subclass contains two infraclasses. One is Pentazonia, which includes the short-bodied pill millipedes. The other is Helminthomorpha, which contains the majority of millipede species. These are often referred to as worm-like millipedes.

Later, Pierre André Latreille proposed the name Chilognatha in 1802. In 1844, Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville coined the name Diplopoda. Between 1890 and 1940, many researchers described thousands of new species. This era saw the highest rates of species descriptions in history. Today, molecular studies continue to challenge and refine how we classify these ancient, many-legged animals.
