life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Anomalocaris was a giant sea animal from a long time ago. Its name means "unlike other shrimp." It lived in the Cambrian oceans. It was one of the biggest animals then. Some experts think it was an apex predator. This means it was at the top of the food chain.

This animal had many parts that helped it move and eat. It had swimming flaps along its body. These flaps worked like fins to help it swim. It also had a large tail fan. This tail helped it steer in the water.

Anomalocaris had two large arms near its mouth. These are called frontal appendages. It used these arms to grasp its prey. It also had very good eyes. These were compound eyes, which are made of many tiny lenses. One eye had over 24,000 lenses! This helped it see very clearly.

For a long time, scientists were confused by its fossils. They found different body parts at different times. They thought the arms were shrimp bodies. They even thought the mouth was a jellyfish. Now, we know they all belong to one big creature.
