Anomalocaris also possessed incredibly advanced vision for its time. It had large, stalked compound eyes that were part of its arthropod body. In a specimen of the species Anomalocaris daleyae, one eye contained over 24,000 lenses. This level of detail is comparable to the vision of a modern dragonfly, which has about 28,000 lenses. Scientists believe these eyes might have even allowed for dichromatic color vision. This visual power was much greater than that of the trilobites living at the same time.

The history of discovering Anomalocaris is a complex tale of scientific error. Fossils were first collected in 1886 by Richard G. McConnell in British Columbia, Canada. In 1892, Joseph Frederick Whiteaves named the species Anomalocaris canadensis. However, scientists originally thought the fossils were different animals. In the late 20th century, paleontologists finally solved the puzzle. Harry B. Whittington led a revision of the Burgess Shale fossils starting in 1966. He and his colleagues, including Simon Conway Morris and Derek Briggs, identified the true nature of the animal. They realized that the mouthparts, the appendages, and the body segments all belonged to the same group of radiodonts. While the name Peytoia is technically accepted for the whole animal, the name Anomalocaris remains for the specific large species.

Size and scale show how dominant this animal was in the Cambrian seas. A complete specimen of A. canadensis could reach a body length of 60 centimeters. When you include its large frontal appendages, the total length is even greater. Some estimates for the species A. daleyae suggest individuals could reach up to 1 meter in length. These massive proportions made it a giant compared to most other contemporary animals. Its existence shows that complex, large-scale hunting behaviors began very early in Earth's history.
