Anomalocaris

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Anomalocaris was a huge animal that lived in the ancient oceans. Its name means "unlike other shrimp." This creature lived during the Cambrian period. It was one of the largest animals of that time. Many scientists believe it was an apex predator. This means it was at the top of the food chain.

This animal had many parts that helped it hunt and move. It swam by waving flexible flaps along its sides. These flaps overlapped like the fins of a fish. This helped the animal swim very well. It also had a large tail fan. This tail likely helped the animal steer through the water.

Finding the whole animal was a very hard job for scientists. In 1886, Richard G. McConnell found the first fossils in Canada. In 1892, Joseph Frederick Whiteaves named the species Anomalocaris canadensis. For a long time, people did not know the parts belonged together. They thought the arms were shrimp and the mouth was a jellyfish. It took many years to put the puzzle together.

Anomalocaris had amazing tools for survival. It had two large arms called frontal appendages. These arms had many segments and spines to grasp prey. Its mouth was a disk shape called an oral cone. This mouth was made of many hard plates. It also had very powerful compound eyes. One eye had more than 24,000 tiny lenses.

These eyes were much better than those of other animals like trilobites. In 2011, scientists found eyes in Australia. This helped them know the animal was an arthropod. An arthropod is a group of animals with hard outer parts. The eyes were almost as good as a modern dragonfly. This shows that advanced eyes existed very early in history.
