life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Opabinia was a strange animal from a long time ago. It lived on the ocean floor 505 million years ago. Scientists found its fossils in Canada.

This animal had a very odd body. It was about 7 cm long. It had a segmented trunk, which means its body was made of many parts. On its sides, it had many flaps. It also had a tail that looked like a fan.

Its head was even more unusual. Opabinia had five eyes. It also had a long, flexible nose called a proboscis. This nose was like a vacuum cleaner hose. It had a small claw at the end. The animal used this nose to find small, soft food. Then it passed the food to its mouth.

For a long time, scientists argued about what Opabinia was. Some thought it was a type of shrimp. Others thought it was a worm. Now, most scientists think it is a basal arthropod. An arthropod is a group of animals like crabs or insects. Opabinia is a close relative to these animals.
