These creatures grow in groups on rocky shores. They also grow on driftwood. They can even grow on shipwrecks.

They are filter feeders. This means they eat bits of food from the water. They use parts called cirri to catch food. These parts have tiny hairs called setae. These hairs help them catch many things. They eat tiny plants and small shrimp. They also eat tiny sea bugs.

Young barnacles swim in the water for a month. They go through seven stages. After that, they settle down to live in one spot. This is called a sessile life.

Many people like to eat them. They are a special food in Spain. People have harvested them by hand for 10,000 years. Because so many are caught, their numbers may be going down. They live near France, Spain, and Portugal. They can also be found near Morocco and Senegal.
