These animals have a very specific way they live. They are filter feeders. This means they get food from the water. They use parts called cirri to catch bits of food. The cirri have tiny hairs called setae. These hairs help them grab many different things. They eat tiny plants called diatoms. They also eat shrimp and small molluscs.

Barnacles go through many changes as they grow. The young larvae swim freely in the ocean. They go through seven different stages. Six of these stages are called nauplii. The last stage is called a cypris. This whole process takes at least one month. Then, they settle into a sessile form. This means they stay in one spot.

Humans have a long history with these barnacles. People have caught them by hand for 10,000 years. This is shown by old archaeological evidence. In Spain, they are called percebe gallego. They can cost as much as €90 per kilogram. Because people catch so many, their numbers may be going down. They grow on rocks and driftwood. They even grow on old shipwrecks.
