Stenopodidea

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Boxer shrimp belong to a group called Stenopodidea. They are small sea animals. Many people mix them up with other shrimp. But they are a special group. You can tell them apart by their legs. They have a third pair of legs that are very big. They also have a different way of having babies. Some shrimp let their eggs float in the water. Boxer shrimp carry their eggs to keep them safe. Their gills are also different. They do not have branching gills like prawns do.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. We know of 71 kinds of these shrimp today. They are split into 12 groups called genera. We also have found fossils of these shrimp. Fossils are remains of animals from the past. One fossil is named Devonostenopus pennsylvaniensis. It lived during the Devonian period. This is a very old time. Before we found that one, we had a different old fossil. It was named Jilinicaris chinensis. That one lived in the Late Cretaceous time.
