The subantarctic is a special area in the southern ocean.

It sits just north of the cold Antarctic region. This area includes many islands in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans.

A big ocean current lives here. It is called the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, or the ACC.

This current flows all the way around the Earth. It moves more water than all the world's rivers combined. The ACC helps control the weather for our whole planet.

Many islands are part of this region. Some islands, like the Crozet Islands, have tundra. Tundra is a cold land with very little plant life. Other islands, like the Falkland Islands, have trees and grass.

These islands do not have permanent ice at their lowest points.

Some islands also have glaciers. A glacier is a large mass of ice. South Georgia is a place with many glaciers. One large glacier there is named the Nordenskjöld Glacier.
