The subarctic is a large region in the North.

It sits just south of the true Arctic. It covers parts of Alaska, Canada, and Russia. It also includes Iceland and parts of Europe.

The weather here is very cold. For most of the year, it stays chilly. In the summer, it stays warm for only a few months. The air is cold, so it does not hold much moisture. This means there is not much rain. Because of this, most places do not have huge glaciers.

Many trees grow here in forests called taiga.

These trees can survive the long winters. In some places, the ground stays frozen all year. This is called permafrost. Permafrost makes it hard and expensive to build roads or cities. Many people use small planes or helicopters to travel instead.

Large animals live in these lands. You might see moose, elk, or bears. You may also see wolves and reindeer.

People also use the land to find minerals. They also fish in the cold seas. Today, many people visit to see the beautiful ice and mountains.
