Big trees cannot grow here. This is because the air is freezing. The growing season is very short. There are three main types of tundra.

One type is the Arctic tundra. It is in the far north. The ground has permafrost. Permafrost is soil that stays frozen all year.

In summer, the top layer of soil melts. This makes the land very soggy. It creates many lakes and marshes. The Arctic tundra is like a polar desert. It does not get much rain.

Small plants like moss and lichen grow there. Animals like the musk ox live in the cold. Another type is the Alpine tundra. This type is found high on mountains. It is also very cold and dry. The third type is the Antarctic tundra. It is found in the far south. Most of Antarctica is covered in ice. Only some rocky areas have plants. The tundra is a very special place.
