Today, the tundra is changing because of climate change.

As the world gets warmer, the permafrost begins to thaw. This thawing can cause the land to slump or sink. When the soil melts, it releases the stored carbon into the air. This creates a feedback cycle. The released gases make the warming even stronger. This can change which living things can survive in the tundra.

The tundra is a unique biome defined by extreme cold and short growing seasons. These harsh conditions prevent the growth of large trees. Instead, the landscape is dominated by low-growing vegetation like dwarf shrubs, sedges, grasses, mosses, and lichens. The boundary where the tundra meets the forest is known as the tree line or timberline.

This ecosystem is vital to the Earth because it acts as a carbon sink. A carbon sink is a place that absorbs and stores more carbon than it releases. The tundra soil is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, containing large amounts of biomass. Much of this organic matter is stored in the permafrost as methane and carbon dioxide.

Permafrost is a layer of subsoil that remains permanently frozen. In the Arctic tundra, this frozen ground dictates how the environment works. During the summer, the top layer of soil thaws, but the permafrost underneath remains solid. Because the water cannot sink into the frozen subsoil, the surface becomes very soggy. This process creates vast networks of marshes, lakes, bogs, and streams.

The Arctic tundra is also considered a polar desert. It receives very little precipitation, often only about 10 inches per year. However, because evaporation is minimal in the cold air, the landscape stays wet during the thaw.

There are three primary types of tundra: Arctic, Alpine, and Antarctic. The Arctic tundra exists in the far Northern Hemisphere, north of the taiga belt. It includes vast areas of northern Russia and Canada.

The Alpine tundra is found in high-altitude mountain regions worldwide. It lacks permafrost and is generally better drained than Arctic soils. The cold in Alpine regions comes from low air temperatures at high altitudes. Finally, the Antarctic tundra is located on Antarctica and several subantarctic islands.

While much of Antarctica is covered in ice, rocky areas support mosses, lichens, and algae.

The history of the word "tundra" is quite interesting. It comes from the Russian word "ту́ндра." The first recorded use in English was in 1824, spelled as "toundra." The exact origin of the Russian term is uncertain. It may be a borrowing from the Sámi language family, where a similar word means an elevated wasteland or marshy plain. Some researchers also suggest the word might have Finnish origins.

Climate change presents a severe threat to these delicate ecosystems. As global temperatures rise, the permafrost begins to thaw. This thawing can cause the landscape to slump or sink. When the frozen soil melts, the stored methane and carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere. This creates a positive feedback cycle. The released greenhouse gases contribute to further warming, which then causes even more permafrost to melt.

The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report suggests that these emissions could significantly increase global warming.

Despite the harshness, the tundra supports specific types of life. The Arctic tundra has low biodiversity, with about 1,700 species of vascular plants and 48 species of land mammals. Notable animals include reindeer, musk ox, Arctic fox, and snowy owls.

In contrast, the Antarctic tundra lacks large mammals due to its physical isolation. Instead, it is home to sea mammals and seabirds like penguins and seals. In the Alpine tundra, plants must adapt to high ultraviolet radiation and extreme dryness. They often grow in "cushion plants" to stay protected near the ground.

The tundra is also a place of significant economic and scientific interest. In regions like the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the land produces 90% of Russia's natural gas. This brings human activity to areas that were once mostly inhabited by nomadic reindeer herders, such as the Nenets and Sámi. Scientists study the tundra to understand the Arctic water cycle and wildfire patterns. In Alaska, research shows that fire-event return intervals typically vary from 150 to 200 years.
