These regions are very cold. They do not have warm summers. The weather stays chilly most of the year. This happens because of how sunlight reaches the ground. The sun hits these areas at a low angle. This means the light is not very direct. Sunlight also has to travel through more atmosphere to reach the surface.

There are two main ways these climates work. The first type is called tundra climate, or ET. In a tundra, at least one month averages above 0°C. You might see plants like the arctic poppy there. Even coniferous trees cannot grow in this soil. The second type is the ice cap climate, or EF. In an ice cap, no month averages above 0°C. No plants can grow in these frozen places. Ice slowly builds up until it slides away.

Scientists have worked hard to name these areas. A man named Wladimir Köppen used tree lines to help. He looked at where forests could no longer grow. He used the temperature of the warmest month to decide. Later, Otto Nordenskjöld made a different formula. He looked at both the warmest and coldest months. In 1947, a man named Holdridge improved these ideas. He used something called biotemperature to study plant life. He treated very cold or very hot numbers as zero.

These climates are found in many places. Antarctica is the only continent with mostly ice cap climates. It is the coldest place on Earth. In 1983, Vostok Station recorded the lowest temperature ever. Antarctica is also a polar desert because it is very dry. The Arctic is an ocean surrounded by land. Russia and Canada are near this ocean. The water stays above 0°C, so it keeps the North Pole warmer than Antarctica.

You can also find polar climates on high mountains. This is called an alpine climate. It happens because the air is much higher up. The summits of the Rockies and the Alps have tundra climates. Some huge mountains like the Himalayas have ice cap climates. Even the Cascade Range has one ice cap summit on Mount Rainier. These mountain tops act just like the poles. They are cold, windy, and often covered in ice.

A polar climate is a specific type of weather pattern found in the coldest parts of our world. These regions cover more than 20% of the Earth's total surface area. In the Köppen climate classification system, these areas are identified by the letter E. They are defined by a lack of warm summers and very cold winters. Because these regions are often far from the equator, they experience extreme changes in daylight. Winter days can be extremely short, while summer days can last for an entire season or longer.

The low temperatures in polar regions are caused by how solar radiation reaches the Earth. At the poles, the sun hits the surface at a low angle. This means the sunlight is not as direct as it is at the equator. Because of this angle, the sunlight must also travel through more of the atmosphere to reach the ground. This process results in much lower intensity of heat. This mechanism explains why these vast areas remain so much colder than the rest of the planet.

Scientists divide polar climates into two distinct subtypes based on temperature. The first is the tundra climate, which is labeled as ET. In a tundra climate, at least one month has an average temperature above 0°C. While it is too cold for even coniferous trees to grow, specialized plants like the arctic poppy can survive. The second subtype is the ice cap climate, labeled as EF. In these regions, no month has an average temperature above 0°C. No plants can grow here, and ice gradually accumulates until it flows or slides away.

Researchers have developed different ways to define these climate boundaries. Climatologist Wladimir Köppen linked the climate to tree lines. He noted that forests cannot survive if the warmest month averages below 10°C. Later, Otto Nordenskjöld proposed a formula involving both the warmest and coldest months. He suggested that for trees to survive, the warmest month must be warmer than the coldest month plus 36. In 1947, Holdridge improved these ideas using biotemperature. He calculated the mean annual temperature by treating any temperature below 0°C or above 30°C as zero. This was because such extremes do not change plant life, as plants remain dormant.

The Arctic and Antarctica show very different versions of the polar climate. Antarctica is the only continent where the ice cap climate is predominant. It is the coldest place on Earth, and Vostok Station recorded the lowest naturally occurring temperature there in 1983. Antarctica is also a polar desert because it is extremely dry. The Arctic is an ocean almost surrounded by landmasses like Russia and Canada. Because ocean water never drops below 0°C, it moderates the Arctic climate. This water keeps the North Pole warmer than Antarctica and prevents coastal areas from warming too much in summer.

Polar climates are not only found at the poles; they also exist at high altitudes. When these climates are caused by elevation rather than latitude, they are called Alpine climates. These mountain climates can mimic either tundra or ice cap conditions. For example, the highest parts of the Rockies, Alps, and Caucasus mountains have tundra climates. Extremely high peaks in the Andes, Himalayas, and Alaska Range have ice cap climates. In the Cascade Range, only the summit of Mount Rainier reaches the ice cap stage.

Understanding these regions helps us see how geography and temperature interact. The presence of ice and snow is a constant feature in the Arctic. Average January temperatures in the Arctic range from about -40°C to -15°C. In July, average temperatures range from about -30°C to 0°C. These specific numbers help scientists track how the environment changes. By studying these zones, we learn how different life forms, from arctic poppies to polar bears, adapt to extreme cold.
