The subarctic is a huge region in the Northern Hemisphere.

It sits just south of the true Arctic zone. This area covers much of Alaska and Canada. It also includes Iceland and parts of Europe. You can find it in Northwestern Russia and Siberia too. Most of this land sits between 50°N and 70°N latitude. This region matters because it has a very unique environment.

It holds many minerals and rich fishing grounds.

Weather in the subarctic works in a very specific way. The air is cold and does not hold much moisture. This means there is usually low precipitation, or rain and snow. Temperatures stay above freezing for only one to three months each year. In the summer, the sun stays up for a very long time. Near the summer solstice, the sun might never go far below the horizon. This creates long periods of twilight or even full daylight.

This cycle is very different from where you might live.

History shows that humans found this land quite difficult to live on. Most of the subarctic was not explored until the 1700s or 1800s. Many early settlements were built just to find minerals. Some of these towns, like those in the Yukon, are now abandoned. In Russia, Joseph Stalin led big industrial projects in the Central Siberian Plateau. This helped people settle the area to reach mineral resources. Later, Canada used hydroelectric power in the 1950s and 1960s to help development.

There are many important facts about the land and its life. The soil is often called podsols or gelisols. In many places, the ground has permafrost, which is soil that stays frozen. This makes building roads and cities very hard and expensive. Murmansk is the largest city in this region. Large animals like moose, elk, and bears live in the taiga forests. You can also find reindeer and wolves there. The Grand Banks and Sea of Okhotsk are two of the richest fisheries in the world.

Today, the subarctic connects to our world through travel and resources. Many people visit the region for tourism to see glacial landscapes. It is often expensive to visit because of the hard travel. People use "bush" planes, helicopters, and riverboats to move around. This is because there are very few roads or rail lines. You might know about mining for metals like nickel or cobalt. These minerals often come from the rich ground in Canada and Siberia. Even though it is a tough place to live, it is full of wonder.
