Ice age

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

An ice age is a time when Earth's surface and air get much colder.

This cooling causes huge ice sheets to grow on land and at the poles. These cold periods are called glacials. When the Earth warms up, we call those times interglacials. Earth's climate moves between icehouse and greenhouse periods. Most of Earth's history has been in greenhouse periods with very little ice. Today, we are actually in a long icehouse period. It is called the Late Cenozoic Ice Age and began 34 million years ago.

Scientists use many clues to see how these changes work. They look at rocks that have been scratched or moved by ice. They also look at moraines, which are piles of rocks left by glaciers.

Another clue comes from fossils of living things. During cold times, animals that like the cold move to warmer areas. Animals that need heat might die out or move away. Scientists also study ice cores. These are long tubes of ice drilled from the ground.

They contain tiny bubbles of old air that show how the atmosphere changed.

Learning about ice ages took a long time. In 1742, Pierre Martel visited the Alps and heard locals talking about ice. He noted that large boulders seemed to have been moved by glaciers. Later, in 1815, Jean-Pierre Perraudin used scratches in rocks to explain these boulders. He argued that ice, not floods, moved the heavy stones. In 1837, Karl Friedrich Schimper used the term "ice age" for the first time. He worked with Louis Agassiz to develop the theory of many glaciations.

It took many years before most scientists believed them.

There are many important dates and numbers in this history. The Quaternary glaciation began about 2.58 million years ago. Within that time, the Last Interglacial ended 115,000 years ago. This was followed by the Last Glacial Period. The coldest part of that time was the Last Glacial Maximum. This happened between 26,000 and 20,000 years ago. The current warm time is called the Holocene. It started 11,700 years ago.

There have been at least five major ice ages in Earth's history.

Understanding ice ages helps us see how our world connects. The movement of ice changes the shape of the land. It creates new valleys and leaves behind strange rock shapes.

These changes affect where living things can survive. When the ice moves, the animals and plants must move too. By studying the past, we learn how the Earth's climate works today. It shows us how one change can lead to many others across the whole planet.
