An ice age is a time when Earth gets very cold.

This cooling makes big sheets of ice grow. These ice sheets cover land and the poles. We call cold times glacials. We call warm times interglacials. Most of Earth's history has been warm. These are called greenhouse periods. But Earth is in a long cold period now. It is called the Late Cenozoic Ice Age. It started 34 million years ago.

Scientists find proof of these times in many ways. They look at rocks and fossils. They also look at ice cores. An ice core is a long tube of ice drilled from the ground. These tubes hold tiny bubbles of old air.

These bubbles help us see how the air changed. Scientists also look at fossils. Some animals like the cold move to new places during an ice age. Other animals that like heat might die out.
