It began about 11,700 years ago. This time started after a long ice age ended. The name comes from Greek words that mean "entirely new."

This era is often called the Age of Humans. This is because people grew and spread across the world. Humans built large cities and made new tools.

The climate has changed a lot during this time. At first, the world became much warmer. Later, melting ice caused sea levels to rise. This even put water in places like Michigan.

Scientists divide the Holocene into three ages. The first was the Greenlandian age. It was a time of warming. The next was the Northgrippian age. This time was much colder. The last age is the Meghalayan. This is the age we are in today. It began after a very long drought. Human actions have also changed the Earth. These changes can affect all living things.
