Many people call it the "Euro" or the "Euros." It is the second most watched soccer event on Earth. Only the FIFA World Cup has more viewers. In 2016, about 600 million people watched the final match. It is a way to find the best team in Europe.

Teams follow a specific path to reach the finals. Most nations must play in a qualifying process first. The host nation does not have to qualify; they join automatically. The tournament happens every four years during even-numbered years. This schedule keeps it between the bigger World Cup tournaments. Sometimes things change, like in 2020 when the pandemic caused a delay. Even then, the tournament kept its original name.

The history of the tournament goes back many years. Before this big event, there were smaller regional cups. For example, the British Home Championship was held starting in 1883. There was also the Central European International Cup from 1927 to 1960. Henri Delaunay, a leader in French soccer, first suggested a pan-European cup. The first official tournament finally started in 1960 in France. The trophy is named the Henri Delaunay Trophy to honor him.

The tournament has grown much larger over time. In 1960, only four teams made it to the finals. By 1980, the number of teams grew to eight. In 1996, the number doubled again to 16 teams. Finally, in 2016, the tournament expanded to 24 teams.

This growth means more countries get to compete. It also means more fans can cheer for their home teams.

Many famous teams have won the championship trophy. Spain is a very successful team with four titles. They are the only team to win two titles in a row. Germany has won three times, while Italy and France have two.
